The Power of Reunions

There is no doubt the wholesome family recreation that we experienced these past few days spending time with my sister and her family visiting from Boise, ID were the best of times . . .  despite some physical ailments.

 As a family we:

Went boating, inaguarating the "Hot Dog."

Played lots of games
(namely "Wolf and Sheep", Monopoly, The Great Dalmuti, etc.)

Playing The Great Dalmuti

BINGO!

Went swimming. . . and swam some more

Enjoyed lots of company, food, and conversation.

Finally, it's a tradition to have a talent show!
A Talent Show is the easiest way for everyone in the family to show off whatever talent they have and there is no limit to what that talent can be!  If you aren't including talent shows as a tradition in your family gatherings, you should start right now to include them.

We reminiscenced some and shared our dislike for cockroaches (pretty common in this home ;-) -- even killing a few throughout the reunion.

We finally got to take some updated family photos.
This photo is just of the grandkids with their Gold grandparents.

But, quite honestly I also experienced the power of prayer and the Holy Ghost as we strived to be considerate and loving towards grandpa (my father) who is slowly recovering from medical ailments.  It was nothing short of incredible to witness the priesthood in action as our priesthood holders in the family gave him a blessing.

One of the criteria for wholesome family activities is for family members to grow closer to our Heavenly Father.  Being with our father during this time of healing allowed us to be more chartible and loving towards him, exemplifying more Christlike attitudes and behaviors.  Because he is immobile, he spent much of his time in bed.  Probably my greatest moment this weekend was when I first arrived in the home on a Sunday afternoon and spent some time with him and my siblings at his bedside just talking about anything and everything.  While there with him, I knew that they loved me.  I thought about how wonderful it is that I will be with them forever and that knowledge--that hope--continues to help me through these troubling times as my father recovers.

Being together as a whole family these past few days gave us opportunities to demonstrate just about all the purposes of wholesome recreational activities.

If you're wondering about the swimsuits (Hunter's only wearing his)...Only in Texas can you go swimming in the lake on Thanksgiving.

Lake Livingston Lodge v. Hurricane Ike

Yes, Ike has and come and gone but I know there was some family out there who was concerned about how my parents' property was effected by the hurricane. We were up there this past weekend enjoying General Conference together and I was able to get a hold of some photos.

The backyard. A single pine tree caused most of the damage. It landed on the gazebo that was over the hot tub. Though the gazebo was completely destroyed, the hot tub remains in tack and still very much usable. This same tree also found the trampoline and destroyed it as well. I understand that my parents didn't waste any time replacing it. In fact, we helped get the new one put up while visiting. This is now their third trampoline (it's been replaced before). We believe that the debris from the falling pine tree took out this window (it's been covered and taped with duct tape).Just a picture showing one of the trees that fell. The waves brought in a lot of debris from the lake. So, we helped clean that up. These are pictures of the nearby marina. Unless you know how the marina is supposed to look you may have a hard time understanding what happened. Andy, you'd understand. Basically, the entire marina was blown several hundred feet (I'm not really sure how far) until it hit the shore. If you notice, there's no way those boats are getting out. The arrow says the marina is to your left (should be quite a ways to your left). However, when it got blown in, it now sits directly behind the sign.

Anyway, for those who were interested in how mom and dad faired in the storm. Nothing too major. They've worked hard and have gotten it mostly cleaned up despite some setbacks. If you want to hear all the stories, you'll have to ask them about it sometime. It would take too much to write it all down here.

In the end, there's a lot more sunshine that hits their property now.

Fun in the Sun

This past weekend we enjoyed time together with family, LOTS of waterplay, boat-riding, tons of sun and probably more food than necessary. Our waterplay included HOURS of "banana-boat" riding (though the kiddos had more fun playing on it while it was tied to the pier rather than dragged behind a boat)! Playing in the water!

On the "banana-boat"

And, the most amazing thing about it was the female Mallard Duck, which we named Daisy, that survived it all! She, we finally learned has built a nest for herself under the waterslide on the pier. There she sits on her nine eggs. Though I'm sure our constant play terrified her at times...she did an excellent job keeping her cool. Needless to say, the waterslide was off limits!!

A short vacation

I will be absent from the blogging world for a few days as we are spending this Memorial Day weekend up at The Lake Livingston Lodge (aka my parents' home). While there we'll enjoy some fun in the sun, a birthday party and the company of my brother and his family who are visiting from New York!

Hopefully, I'll have some stories and pics to share upon our return!

Hunter's Famous Turtle

After some rains at Grandma Gold's House (Spring Break 2008), Hunter made the most fantastic discovery...the smallest turtle he had ever seen! He wanted to protect it...made a "nest" for it and named it Turtley. He succeeded in protecting it...from his fellow cousins that were equally ecstatic. Of course, though, like all wild animals, it did eventually wander away. Hunter certainly loves animals--especially those he can touch and handle!! Bugs especially. However, he's deathly afraid of roaches--a popular invader here in Texas.

His most recent encounter was with live crawfish. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures or video of that experience!!
